For the last few years, I have been spending most of my time working at an auction house. It was a bold career move when I started here from being a lawyer, but I needed a change of scenery. I was stressed out and tired of working 14-hour days and I needed something different. When this opportunity fell in my lap I had to take it.

But it was quite a challenge getting used to the reduced wages. I had to cut back on my lifestyle, and though my wife did not like it, we did adjust within the first six months of taking the new job. She liked the change in me and loved spending more time with me, so the move was certainly worth it.

If you were to ask me what I really love about this job, I would have to say that setting up for the weekly auctions would be my favorite part. It is always interesting to see what treasures will be up for sale on the auction block, and it is great to see all the action in the room when the auction is on.

But before the auction can begin, we need to setup the lots, figure out the initial pricing and get everything ready to go. In most cases it takes us a couple of days to get everything all sorted out before the weekend, so we don’t usually start until Wednesday.

This week there are a number of interesting things up for auction including some old Ford Model Ts, some shuffleboards, and pallet upon pallet of yogurt. The yogurt would certainly win the award for strange products, but I guess the local Costco mistakenly ordered more than they could sell, so they are getting rid of them.

It looks like this week’s auction should be a good one, and we are expecting a record turnout. But I can’t wait to see what is for sale next week.
